Indian Tv Serials VS English Tv Series

What on Indian TV Serials

5% Story, 25% Ads, 20% Crying, 25% Focus in & out , 25% Dhoomtana Dhoomtana tere na tere na…..

It was a usual day and my mom switched on her all-time favorite Indian T.V soap on Star Maa and I decided to sit through the daily dose of “entertainment”. It was a Hindi dubbed serial. During our casual talk, mom explained why ‘Gangaa’ is her favorite, ‘Diya aur Baati Hum’ has a great plot and ‘Iss pyaar ko kya naam doon?’ is worth a try. A mental debate started right away to counter her opinion.

Serials Vs Series

I could easily comprehend that while I was thinking only a fraction of people watch the Indian TV soaps, I was wrong. A fraction of people view the English ones, their audience comprises of 16-30 year olds. From what I analyzed in the recent past, Indian TV soaps are all about abysmal sadness, saas bahu chronicles crooked reality, stunt shows and more nonsense. The recently launched TV show ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ on Sony is facing flak for showing a love story between an 18-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy. But the real question that comes to my mind is how come the standard of Indian shows has fallen down so much? It’s sad that the massive viewership of Indian TV serials is being wasted on sub standard content.

The youth today is inclined towards watching the English TV serials like Game of Thrones, Friends, Sherlock, House Of Cards and more. Some would argue that English TV series aren’t suitable for all kinds of audience, this is correct, but then why can’t the Indian TV show makers create shows of great potential in terms of thrill and drama with less objectionable scenes? Sasuraal Simar Ka and Naagin, one of the highest TRP grossing shows, have nothing except the over sanskaari leads, illogical supernatural twists and a stupid story line of an Icchadhaari Naagin. Our sitcoms are not so great either with an exception being ‘Amrutham’, a telugu sitcom which aired for 6 years and was great till the very last episode.

I don’t think it is the mistake of the TV show makers. The problem lies with us, the viewers. The TRPs of such shows soar, why? Because the audience wants to watch them. This is the reason why the makers come with more regressive and cringe worthy concepts, as they earn money from it. If we want such shows to stop and better content to come up, we need to stop watching the shows with such ideas. Only then the standard of Indian shows will rise. I am waiting for the day when I won’t have to download the new seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’ , instead, I will be busy watching an Indian TV series.
